ISSUE 19: RESHAPING SOCIAL NORMS FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN PAKISTAN:THE NEED OF THE HOUR

Message from Editor in Chief

Throughout history, social norms have influenced and dictated the roles, expectations, and opportunities assigned to individuals based on their gender. These norms often perpetuate inequalities, limit individual potential, and restrict progress towards gender equality. Social norms are the unwritten rules and expectations that govern our behaviors' and interactions within society.  Gender inequality is deeply rooted in social norms, which often restrict the rights and freedoms of women and girls. Reshaping these norms is essential to empower women and girls to exercise their agency, pursue education and careers, participate in decision-making processes, and lead fulfilling lives. Reshaping social norms is not solely about empowering women; it also involves challenging norms around masculinity. Traditional masculine norms often perpetuate toxic behaviors' such as aggression, dominance, and emotional suppression. Reshaping social norms for gender equality is a collective responsibility. It requires the active participation and engagement of individuals, communities, organizations, and policymakers. By fostering dialogue, raising awareness, and promoting education, we can create a movement that challenges outdated norms and fosters a more inclusive and equal society for all.
