Issue 11 Together We Rise: World Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2022
Message from Editor in Chief
Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of death among all the cancers and the first leading cause of death among females. Worldwide, every 2 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer as well as a woman dies from it which makes it more than 1,400 women every day. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia, and trends suggest that this is likely to increase unless more is done to remove barriers to early screening. According to WHO, in 2020, nearly 26,000 women were diagnosed and over 13,500 women died of breast cancer in Pakistan. Nearly, 109 women die due to breast cancer everyday in Pakistan. A multipronged approach is required, with complementary strategies that engage patients meaningfully and in ways that align with their needs, preferences and values. Such approaches should be integrated across the cancer care continuum to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach. This year 2022, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month theme is “Together We Rise” through which the education and awareness of breast cancer is attempted across the world.
