Issue 2 Gender Equity among Healthcare Professionals in Pakistan

Message from Editor in Chief

On behalf of the Editorial Board, it is with great pride and sincere privilege that I am writing this message to present current issue of She Matters, on a very important theme i.e. Gender Equity. Launching this issue would not have been possible without the great and much appreciated contributions from the editorial and technical team. The robust intellectual support and well-timed contribution of content writers deserve special appreciatory applause. Our team expects similar sort of sincere dedication from the writers in near future.

Equity is successfully enacted when all groups are given the needed number and types of resources so that they achieve equal results in comparison with other groups. Equality, in contrast, is a “one size fits all” approach that promotes equal distribution of resources. In academia, women faculty face both in equality and inequity. Gender disparity is a worldwide phenomenon. This disparity is not only with respect to opportunities and resources but also in rewards, and exists in all regions and classes. Managerial positions are usually held by males, who not only have more decision making power but also have more opportunities of social networking. Women have to achieve a successful career at the cost of their family life. According to UIS data, less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women. The female professionals must work as collaborative, integrated team to achieve the goal of minimizing gender gap.

This issue include facts about gender equity and an interview with Ms. Nadia Bukhari a strong advocate of gender equity. Moreover, global challenges & barriers towards gender equity in healthcare profession have been discussed and articles on importance of women financial literacy as well a perspective of gender equity with respect to culture and religion have also been included. Real stories from women facing gender disparities are also part of the issue. Moreover, two initiatives related to gender equity in Pakistan have also been included.
